Hitching Your Wagon v. Riding Solo: Every Entrepreneurs First Trot by Stacy Cassio - How You Know When Its Time & What To Do With TheOne When I moved from Quinter Kansas (population 954) to the NYC metro area (population 20.2 million) I often frequented Central Park. I loved to watch thehorses. Okay so they werent quite farm horses. They were pulling carriages of romantic first dates and demanding tourists. But they were horses nonetheless. They looked and smelled like home. I would stay until it made me sadhomesick or otherwise. Most of the time it ended in feeling so badly that this beautiful creature had been harnessed to fulfill others Big CityDreams. The Entrepreneurs Plight Two files sit on the desktop of almost every aspiring entrepreneur: a Resume & a BusinessPlan. Both get updated occasionally. We add titles years stops skills to the resumeall in pursuit of someone elses dream. For some of us the business plan changes much more frequentlyat least mentally thatis. Around every corner there is a new business concept partner or venture. There have been so many versions of the business plan that friends and family are now numb tothem. But we stillbelieve. None have come to fruition. None have amounted to more than a tipsy dream at a dinner table. None have generated a cent ofrevenue. Yet we stillbelieve. And still in moments of paralyzing fear and crippling self-doubt we fall back on the resume that sits on our desktop. That passionless unimaginative now aging (Gulp. How did we get this old right?!?!) trusty old file that sits there and allows us to conveniently hide from ourdreams. We are the horses in Central Park harnessed by someone elsesdream. (Probably mixed with a slight panic attack soul-moving whirlwind and some incoherent thoughts & words that make no sense to anyone not in yourbrain.) But itsIT. Its the one idea that takes every good experience innate talent and life-long passion and turns them into your lifeswork. Its theone. The one you lose sleep friends and anything closely resembling a social life for. The one that pushes all other entrepreneurial endeavors to the wayside. The one you will work for sweat for sacrifice for. Congratulations. Its really theone. You have broken free from the harness and are running free in CentralPark! What To Do With TheOne Um damn. SoCentral Park and a city of unapologetic pedestrian & vehicle traffic is no place for this horse to be runningfree. But theres only one way out of the city and its one step at atime. Tip #1: Practice Practice Practice. Be the character before you get thepart. Buy some business cards and start introducing yourself as the Founder ofXYZ. They know the answers to the business questions you will have. They believe in your idea but are more invested in your professional success. Champions get the idea and need the idea. They are your potential customer. They know how important product or service. They believe in your mission and would pay for the product or service.
